Language requirements for studying in France

Whether you need French depends on the language your program is taught in. Both French-taught and English-taught options are widely available.

French-taught programs

These usually ask for a recognised proficiency level (often B2), evidenced by a test such as the DELF/DALF or the TCF. Check the exact level your program requires.

English-taught programs

Many master's programs are taught fully in English and instead ask for an English test score (such as IELTS or TOEFL). Learning some French still helps enormously with daily life.

Requirements differ by institution and program, so confirm the accepted tests and minimum scores on the program page before you apply — you can browse programs offered in France on PlaceStudent.
