Opening a student bank account in Europe

A local bank account makes paying rent, receiving a salary and setting up direct debits much easier once you arrive. The basics are similar across France, Spain and Belgium.

What you usually need

  • A passport or national ID
  • Proof of address (a lease or residence certificate)
  • Proof of enrolment at your institution
  • Your visa or residence permit, if applicable

Traditional vs online banks

Traditional banks offer in-branch help and student packages but can be slower to open. App-based banks are quick to set up and travel-friendly, though some services (like certain official payments) may still be easier with a local account. Many students open an online account first, then switch or add a local bank later.

Fees, required documents and student perks vary by bank and country — compare a couple of options before committing.
