Health insurance for international students in France

France has an excellent healthcare system, and students are expected to be covered. How you get covered depends on where you are from.

EU / EEA / Swiss students

A valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) generally covers you for necessary care during your studies. Bring it and keep it valid.

Students from elsewhere

Most non-EU students register — usually free of charge — with the French student health system (Assurance Maladie) after arriving. Many also take out a complementary "mutuelle" for costs the base scheme does not fully reimburse.
